Method can be used in industrial, environmental, ecological and scientific and research laboratories, as well as for control over the oil-containing emulsions, deposits (oil sludges) composition in oil pipelines, tubing, in tanks, etc. Method envisages carrying out of an anhydrous copper sulfate CuSOexothermic reaction with the test sample, calculation of the difference between the test sample initial temperature and its maximum temperature that is achieved as a result of the CuSOhydration reaction, contained in the sample with water, and water content determination according to the graph of the of the indicated temperature difference dependence on the
