A laser device comprising a plurality of controllable components directs alaser beam with laser energy towards a target portion of an eye under controlof acontrol computer. An image capture system captures an image of the eye forobtaining measurements of optical density of the eye. A control computerinstructsthe controllable components to direct a plurality of trial shots towards atrial portion,at least two trial shots directed towards different corneal depths. Thecontrolcomputer establishes measurements of the trial shots on the trial portion fromtheimage capture system to determine the laser energy. The control computerinstructs the controllable components to direct the laser beam also towardsthetarget portion of the eye.
