This invention relates to a system of irrigating crops that operates by capillary action. The system operates at atmospheric or near-atmospheric pressure compared to the conventional irrigation systems, particularly drip irrigation systems, overcoming limitations in terms in terms of operation, repair, and maintenance. The operation at atmospheric or near-atmospheric pressure is achieved by the provision of a surface level limiter (4) to adjust the free surface level (13) of the liquid (2) to a level much lower than that of the water tank (1) but slightly higher than the ground surface (14).
