The tissue removal catheter includes a sensor configured to detect a parameter of the catheter during a cutting operation of the catheter when the tissue removal element is in the tissue removal position. A locking control circuit is in electrical communication with the sensor and the locking device. During the actuation control function, the locking control circuit receives a signal from the sensor based at least in part on the parameters of the catheter being detected during the catheter cutting operation. The locking control circuitry determines if the received signal indicates that the tissue removal component is engaged with non-tissue occlusion.
