PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods for making antioxidant-doped medical implants comprising ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE).SOLUTION: The method for making oxidation resistant polymeric material comprises: (a) mixing UHMWPE with &alpha-tocopherol (b) consolidating the UHMWPE mixture (c) heating the consolidated UHMWPE at a temperature below the melting point of the UHMWPE mixture (d) irradiating the consolidated UHMWPE mixture heated to a temperature ranging from the room temperature to the temperature below the melting point of the UHMWPE mixture, with ionizing radiation and (e) machining the consolidated UHMWPE mixture before and after the irradiation by the step (d).
