Disclosed is a replaceable needle assembly (30) for a retractable, prefilled syringe (10). The disclosure notes that the practice of sharing needles without adequate sterilisation is a major contributor to the transfer of HIV. Syringes have been developed to include a retraction mechanism to prevent re-use and/or needle stick injury. The replaceable needle assembly (30) for a retractable syringe comprising a barrel (11) having a mounting member (16) and a plunger (20), whereby the retractable needle assembly (30) can be replaced by a user without affecting the retraction mechanism. The replaceable needle assembly (30) comprises a needle mount (36), retractable needle (39) and a needle retainer (35). The needle mount (36) is removably mountable to the mounting member (16) of the barrel (11). The retractable needle (39) is removably mounted to the needle mount (36) and is capable of being engaged by the plunger (20) to facilitate retraction of the retractable needle (39). The needle retainer (35) comprises a plurality of fingers that releasably engage the retractable needle (39) to prevent inadvertent retraction of the retractable needle (39) until the plunger (20) engages the retractable needle (39) for retraction.
