Systems and methods are disclosed for applying electrical stimulation to different subpopulations of target neural tissue to optimize spinal cord stimulation. According to one aspect, a method includes applying a first pattern of electrical stimulation to a first subpopulation of a target neural tissue of a subject. The method also includes applying a second pattern of electrical stimulation to a second subpopulation of the target neural tissue of the subject, wherein the second pattern of electrical stimulation is a first pattern of electrical stimulation.
