A method for applying a bone attachment coating to a the surface of a prosthetic component 12, the bone attachment coating being formed from a plurality of particles 20, comprises exciting the said particles with an ultrasonic exciter 130 so as to increase the kinetic and/or thermal energy of the particles without significantly heating the prosthetic component. The kinetic and/or thermal energy of the particles causes localized heating of the component such that the particles may be embedded into a bone facing surface of the prosthetic component (see Fig 5(b)). An apparatus for performing the said method comprises an ultrasonic exciter configured to increase the vibrational energy of the particles without significantly heating the prosthetic component. The method may further comprises a step of applying pressure by virtue of a press which forces the particles into the surface of the bine facing surface of the prosthetic component.
