A method for detecting the presence of a portable direct radiographic panel in a medical imaging system including radiographic exposure stands, each stand and each panel being provided with an NFC tag, includes positioning a panel in an exposure stand such that the NFC tags of the panel and the stand are in each others operating range, detecting the presence of the panel in the exposure stand by a-communication between the NFC tags, and communicating the presence of the panel in the exposure stand to the medical imaging system.
