A method for cleaning a canal of a patient's ear canal (ET) includes using an instrument (4000). The instrument includes a proximal portion (402), a distal portion (406), and a shaft (408) extending therebetween, with a treatment mechanism (414) disposed on the distal portion. The method includes directing the instrument into the patient's oronasal cavity and advancing at least a distal portion of the instrument into the opening of the ET. The method further includes advancing the instrument within the ET such that the treatment mechanism is disposed across or in alignment with the isthmus.
