The priming indicator for the fluid injection system includes a luer cap 20 having an indicator surface 22 covered by a membrane 24 or other components of the injection system. The membrane exhibits a first visual characteristic such as opaque state when dry and a second visual characteristic such as a less opaque state when wet. When the membrane is wetted, markings on the surface that can be provided on the rod that are at least partially covered by the membrane can be visualized, thus indicating that the intravenous tube to which the luer cap is fixed is primed or nearly primed.
