Systems are provided for delivering sutures to close the surgical opening. The elongated deployment member may have a resistive member that is retracted at the distal end. The resistive member may be deployed to resist insertion into the surgical opening and retraction from the opening. The compression member may slide the elongate member to compress the tissue to be sealed against the resilient member. The suture passageways loaded with the suture ends may exit the elongate member and the tissue may pass through the tissue to be sutured and then through the needle tubes in the elongate member to lower the suture ends with the suture catcher. The suture passer can be retracted leaving the suture ends. The suture catcher retracts with the suture ends retained and the device-elongated member, retracted suture catch and retained suture end-can retract from the surgical opening.
