An acetabular reamer (10&prime) for cutting a required cut shape is described. The reamer (10&prime) has a cutting shell (12&prime) having a series of doubly curved cutting teeth (16&prime) thereon of a quantity to substantially reduction a cutting pressure ON each tooth as well as to reduction a size of a typical chip generated upon cutting. Substantially all of the teeth have a matched arc cutting edge (20&prime) of substantial length that has a cutting profile which substantially matches a profile of a shape to be cut. The apertures in which the cutting edges are formed have at least one straight edge (80) by which a punch, used in the process of forming the edge and may be oriented. Such a configuration reduces the number of teeth required to cut the shape.
