A surgical portal apparatus for receiving medical instrumentation includesa portal member adapted for passage through tissue for providing access to anunderlying tissue site, and having a longitudinal opening extending therethrough.The portal member has a magnetic material for creating a magnetic field adaptedto urge magnetically responsive instrumentation at least toward the longitudinalopening to permit passage therethrough and use of the instrumentation in performinga medical procedure adjacent the tissue site.
