PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope system and an external control device of an endoscope, capable of appropriately recovering displacement of word synchronization (alignment) due to noise, etc. during transmission based on appropriate word synchronous data in the endoscope system for transmitting an imaging signal in serial from an imaging device of the endoscope to the external control device (processor device).SOLUTION: In the processor device 11 connected to the endoscope 10, the image signal transmitted in serial from an imaging chip 42 of the endoscope 10 is converted to parallel data by an S/P convertor 81, and is then decoded by an 8B10B decoder 82. Word synchronous data are inserted into the imaging signal at prescribed intervals.
