596813 Disclosed is a modified red blood cell wherein the modification consists of an association complex consisting of a drug and a recombinant carrier protein for the drug, wherein the uncomplexed form of the drug is capable of readily passing the red blood cell membrane and wherein the uncomplexed recombinant carrier protein, owing to its size, cannot readily pass the red blood cell membrane. Further disclosed is a modified red blood cell containing a carrier protein that cannot readily pass the red blood cell membrane and which can form an association complex with a target drug, the uncomplexed form of the drug being capable of readily passing the red blood cell membrane, wherein the carrier protein, or a functional analogue thereof, is recombinant or occurs in wild type red blood cells and is present at elevated levels.
