The present invention relates to the manufacture of articles to be worn on the lower torso of a wearer, such as disposable absorbent article like diapers, training pants, adult incontinence articles, feminine care articles and the like. A first continuous web 5510 is used to form the central piece, a second web 5410 for the side panels and a third web 5310 for the leg hoops. The second and third webs are attached to each other on a first turret 5100. The first web is provided on a second turret 5200 which comprises at least two and preferably four web handling means 5222, 5228, 5232, 5328. By varying the speed and/or direction of rotation of the web handling means the length of the central piece may be altered. The rotation and speed are altered by a control unit 5800.
