PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an underpants type absorbent article, the waistline of which is very permeable and soft, and permitting the shrinking force of an elastic member of waistline gathers to be fully utilized, and its manufacturing method.
SOLUTION: The underpants type absorbent article has an absorbent main body 3 and a covering material 2. The covering material 2 is formed of an outer layer sheet 21, an inner layer sheet 22 and elastic members 23 to 26. The waistline gathers formed of composite stretch sections are provided in a waistline portion D. In the composite stretch sections, sheets 21 and 22 are mutually joined by intermittent joints in the stretching direction of the composite stretch sections and directions intersecting the stretching direction at right angles, the elastic members 23 are arranged, going around the joints and fixed to the sheets 21 and 22 at both ends of the elastic members 23 and each of the sheets 21 and 22 is formed by forming a plurality of waistline gathers across a plurality of elastic members 23. The waistline gathers are arranged in the width direction between the vicinities of the side edges and the side sealed portions of the absorbent main body 3 but not arranged between the vicinities of the side edges of the absorbent main body 3.
