An illumination device for use in medical illumination of an object of interest in a patient comprises a light diffusing optical fiber and at least partially optically opaque sheath, wherein the at least partially optically opaque sheath is Disposed to cover the fiber so as to move selectively along the length of the fiber.After inserting the optical fiber into the patient to illuminate certain areas of the tissue, sliding the sheath relative to the optical fiber can selectively control the length, size and \/ or shape of the light exposed by the tissue.
