Preparation of a solid sodium formate preparation comprises (i) preparing an aqueous solution, which exhibits formic acid, sodium formate and water; (ii) subjecting the aqueous solution to crystallization and separating a solid phase from mother liquor; (iii) supplying the mother liquor during the production of the aqueous solution, to a distilling device; (iv) mixing the mother liquor with a sodium-containing base to form a mixture containing sodium formate and formic acid; (v) mixing the mixture with formic acid; and (vi) removing the water by withdrawing from the distilling device. Preparation of a solid sodium formate preparation with a content of at least 35 wt.% of formic acid, comprises: (i) at increased temperature, preparing an aqueous solution, which exhibits a molar ratio of formic acid and sodium formate of more than 1.5:1 and a molar ratio of formic acid and water of at least 1.1:1; (ii) subjecting the aqueous solution to crystallization and separating a solid phase from mother liquor; (iii) supplying the mother liquor, optionally after removal of a partial quantity of the mother liquor, during the production of the aqueous solution, to a distilling device; (iv) mixing the mother liquor with a sodium-containing base to form a mixture containing sodium formate and formic acid; (v) mixing the mixture with formic acid under receipt of the aqueous solution; and (vi) removing the water that is not needed for the production of the aqueous solution, by withdrawing from the distilling device.
