A manually pumped electronic cigarette is disclosed. The cigarette (10) includes a capillary tube (18) in communication with a liquid supply (14) including liquid material and a heater (19) operable to heat the capillary tube to a temperature sufficient to vaporize the liquid material contained therein and form an aerosol. The liquid supply is adapted to be squeezed or otherwise compressed so as to allow a smoker to manually pump liquid to the capillary tube and simultaneously activate the heater. A pressure switch (44) is used to sense the pumping action and enable power from the power supply (12) to energise the heater.
