PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technologies for promoting the growth of bifidobacteria or lactic acid bacteria in an environment where these bacteria can grow or maintain the cell number, and for suppressing the cell decrease in an environment where their growth or survival is difficult.SOLUTION: The invention provides an agent comprising Peucedanum japonicum as an effective ingredient for promoting the growth of Bifidobacterium bacteria and/or lactic acid bacteria and/or for suppressing their decrease. Also provided is an oral composition comprising Peucedanum japonicum and at least one strain of bacteria selected from the group consisting of Bifidobacterium bacteria and lactic acid bacteria.
