The present invention provides a diagnostic reagent or assay for assessing theactivity of a protease in vivo or invitro and methods of detecting the presence of a cancerous or precancerouscell. The assays are comprised of two particles linkedvia an oligopeptide linkage that comprises a consensus sequence specific forthe target protease. Cleavage of the sequence by thetarget protease can be detected visually or using various sensors, and thediagnostic results can be correlated with cancerprognosis.
