The smoking article comprises a housing having a mouthpiece and adapted to receive a nicotine-containing aerosol generating base. The smoking article also includes a control electronics configured to control the delivery of the nicotine containing aerosol from the nicotine-containing aerosol generating base through the mouthpiece. The smoking article further comprises a nicotine metabolite sensor located in the mouthpiece and operatively coupled to the control electronics. The sensor is positioned such that when the smoker contacts his mouth with the mouthpiece, the sensor can detect the amount or concentration of the nicotine metabolite in the saliva of the smoker. The smoking article may store data about the amount of nicotine metabolite detected by the sensor or may, for example, inform the smoker.
