Feeding device generates feed consumption data and is further configured to connect to the Internet. Feeding system also includes a database located remotely relative to the feeding device. Feeding device transmits measurements and data on feed consumption to the database via an Internet connection. Database is designed to analyse the measurement and data on feed consumption using the information stored in the database, which is selected from the group consisting of scientific information, previously collected data on the pet, previously collected data on other pets of the same type of pet, and combinations thereof. Database is configured to automatically transmit a message to the feeding device based on the results of the analysis. Message contains a command indicating the amount of pet food dispensed by the feeding device.
