PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cell therapy for treatment of neurodegeneration, which fulfills the urgent need for safe and effective therapy to alleviate and/or prevent neurodegeneration.SOLUTION: According to the present invention, there is provided a method for separating and selecting a population of heterogeneous bone marrow cells, which are effective for neurodegeneration and called NCS-01. The NCS-01 cells have been shown to treat, for example, neurodegeneration caused by ischemia. According to the present invention, in vivo studies demonstrate that selected NCS-01 cell populations treat neurodegeneration in a standard rat middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) animal model under transient or permanent total arterial occlusion conditions. These studies also show that, when neurodegeneration is caused by cerebral infarction, combining administration of a selected NCS-01 cell population with a thrombolytic agent and/or a mechanical clot removal method reduces the volume of the infarct caused by the acute onset of neurodegeneration. According to the present invention, therefore, there is provided an ensured cell therapy that exerts a significant clinical effect on a patient survival rate after stroke.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1A
