A method and apparatus for remotely verifying the calibration status of adiagnostic instrument, for example, followingremote installation of a software upgrade on the instrument. In one example, amethod of verifying the calibration status ofthe instrument, includes retrieving stored raw calibration test data generatedduring a previously-performed calibration of theinstrument, processing the raw calibration test data to generate a diagnosticreading, comparing the diagnostic reading to a knownnominal reading, and based on the comparison, generating an output indicativeof the calibration status of the instrument. In oneexample, the method is performed without contemporaneously measuring acalibration object with the instrument and therefore,without activating the measurement head or measurement optics of theinstrument.
