An apparatus for the treatment of a liquid comprising includes a chamberhaving at least one inner surface. Thechamber is at least 80 percent enclosed. The apparatus also includes anultraviolet (UV) transmissive tube and the UV transmissivetube disposed within the chamber and adapted for the passage of the liquidtherethrough. The apparatus further includes anUV lamp and the UV lamp being disposed within the UV transmissive tube. Areflective material is interspersed between thechamber and the transmissive tube, and the reflective material is adapted soas to reflect at least a portion of light emitted by theUV lamp. Additionally, the reflective material is at least 80 percentreflective.
