PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter material capable of removing effectively a chemical substance such as formaldehyde, and maintaining the effect stably for a long period； and to provide an air cleaner using the same.SOLUTION: In a filter material 15 containing a pre-stage layer, and a subsequent stage layer provided on the downstream side of an air flow relative to the pre-stage layer, and having a sheet shape formed by close contact of the pre-stage layer and the subsequent stage layer, the pre-stage layer contains a radical scavenger and a fiber bed 20, and the subsequent stage layer contains an absorbent containing an amine-based compound, and a base material layer 19, to be thereby able to collect formaldehyde stably for a long period.
