The surgical instrument includes an extended barrel having an effector jaw mounted on a carrier secured to the distal end of the barrel. The handle includes a grip for opening and closing the effector jaw, a knob for articulating the carrier, a knob for rotating the barrel, and a safety device for automatically preventing accidental operation of the grip. Each jaw rotates around the pin and is actuated by a rod joined by the grip. The lever is pivotally mounted to the handle, and includes a latch that blocks movement of the grip unless the lever is pivoted proximally to the spring bias. When the lever is released, the latch automatically returns to the closed position.
