This invention relates to a process for the production of lactic acid comprising the steps of providing a substrate in a medium and inoculating the same with an inoculum comprising Lactobacillus amylophilus GV6, subjecting the substrate to fermentation to obtain a fermented broth followed by centrifugation of the broth to obtain lactic acid from the supernatant.
