PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease necrotic death of reactive astrocytes and to reduce extravasation of blood as an improved therapeutic strategy to treat spinal cord injury.SOLUTION: The present invention is directed to therapeutic compositions targeting the NCCa-ATP channel of an astrocyte, neuron or capillary endothelial cell and methods of using the same. More specifically, antagonists of the NCCa-ATP channel are contemplated.
