A method of making a hollow cage for implantation in a bone cavity includes providing a wire braid and inserting a former such as a spherical ball inside the wire braid. The wire braid and former are placed inside a mould. Excess wire braid is trimmed from the mould, creating trimmed ends of the braid. The mould is heat set with the former and wire braid. The former and wire braid are removed from the ball and the former is removed from the wire braid, resulting in a hollow wire cage.
