A handheld medical event recorder (100) is described which incorporates a touch screen display (102) and a video camera (104). A graphical user interface on the touch screen display is arranged such that the user may annotate the medical event simply by touching an appropriate icon on the screen. The displayed icons and information are contextually appropriate to the medical event. Video of the medical event may be provided simultaneously with the graphical user interface.
