The device (1) has a lighting device for illuminating a vessel (3), particularly by shrink fitting attached label (4), and a camera for imaging the illuminated label. The lighting device has two separately controllable light screens (12a,12b,12e,12f), which are directed in the opposite areas (4b,4c) of the labels. An independent claim is also included for a method for the inspection of labeled vessels.
