The present invention relates to a composition and a health functional food for preventing, alleviating or treating arthritis comprising a mixed extract of Achyranthis Japonicae Radix and Scutellariae Radix, and a mixed extract of Achyranthis Japonicae Radix, Scutellariae Radix and Acanthopanacis Cortex. The composition does not cause toxicity, has gloss and smooth articular cartilage, increases the proteoglycan content in articular cartilage, reduces expression of inflammatory cytokine TNF- and IL-1, and MMP2 and MMP9 genes which are matrix metalloproteinases, and increases expression of TIMP1 gene, thereby being used as a composition for preventing, alleviating or treating arthritis.본 발명은 우슬, 황금의 혼합 추출물 또는 우슬, 황금, 오가피의 혼합 추출물을 포함하는 관절염 예방, 개선 또는 치료용 조성물 및 건강기능식품에 관한 것이다. 본 발명의 조성물은 독성을 유발하지 않으면서 관절연골이 윤택감 있고 매끄러워지며 관절연골 내 프로테오글리칸의 함유율을 증가시키고, 염증성 사이토카인 TNF-α 및 IL-1β와 연골분해효소인 MMP2, MMP9 유전자의 발현을 감소시키고 및 TIMP1 유전자의 발현을 증가시키는 효과가 있으므로 관절염의 예방, 개선 또는 치료용 조성물로 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.
