PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water retention assistant capable of exhibiting excellent water retentivity while suppressing remarkable deterioration of the absorption rate thereof.SOLUTION: The water retention assistant, which is incorporated in an absorber for absorbing a liquid, contains particles each containing xanthan gum and guar gum and satisfies the following three conditions. The condition (1) is that the guar gum has the weight average molecular weight (Mw) equal to or higher than 2,700,000 daltons. The condition (2) is that the particle contains 100 pts.wt. of the guar gum and 0.6-10 pts.wt. of the xanthan gum.
