The present application is directed to an immunogenic cochleate including: an antigen or a nucleic acid encoding an antigen in an amount effective to induce an immune response in a subject, wherein the antigen or the nucleic acid is encapsulated within the cochleate, and wherein the cochleate comprises a lipid component and a multivalent cation component.
