589237 An apparatus (100) for retaining a needle is disclosed. The apparatus comprises housing (102) defining an inner region and a biasing member (114) coupled to the housing having a latch extension (200). The latch extension extends away from the central axis toward the exterior of the housing and is shaped and sized to engage an aperture (304) in a catheter adapter (120) to secure the housing (102) to the catheter adapter (120). The biasing member (114), in a single action, displaces a needle (116) away from the central axis and disengages the latch extension (200) from the aperture (304) in the catheter assembly when the needle is withdrawn through the distal opening (110).
