A system for treating or providing prophylaxus against a pulmonary infectionis disclosed comprising: a) a pharmaceutical formulation comprising a mixtureof free antiinfective and antiinfective encapsulated in a lipid-basedcomposition, and b) an inhalation delivery device. A method for providingprophylaxis against a pulmonary infection in a patient and a method ofreducing the loss of antiinfective encapsulated in a lipid-based compositionupon nebulization comprising administering an aerosolized pharmaceuticalformulation comprising a mixture of free antiinfective and antiinfectiveencapsulated in a lipid-based composition is also disclosed.
