Skin care/lightening agent based on protocatechuic acid derivatives, their isosteres and analogues, and dermopharmaceutical / cosmetic compositions containing the same, and methods for mailing and using the same. More specifically, the present invention relates to protocatechuic acid derivatives, their isosteres and analogues as skin care agents having both skin lightening and sunscreen activity and the compositions thereof. The invention particularly relates to the protocatechuic acid derivatives of the Formula 1 given below Formula 1 Wherein R1 represents H or alkyl groups R2 represents H or alkyl groups R’n represents one to three hydroxy or alkoxy groups, X represents O or N (R1) and Y represents methylene group their pharmaceutically/cosmetically acceptable salts, stereoisomers, enantiomers, polymorphs, pseudopolymorphs thereof, free from or mixed with other enantiomers or stereoisomers or polymorphs or pseudopolymorphs Advantageously, the present invention is useful as conjoint skin lightening and sunscreen agent thereby functioning as a skin lightening cum care composition.
