The present invention relates to a novel use of an Anemarrhena asphodeloides bunge extract and the like, and provides a composition for preventing or treating colitis, containing an Anemarrhena asphodeloides bunge extract, a fraction thereof or a compound isolated therefrom as an active ingredient. According to the present invention, the Anemarrhena asphodeloides bunge extract, an alcohol soluble fraction of the Anemarrhena asphodeloides bunge extract, or mangiferin isolated from the Anemarrhena asphodeloides bunge extract can be used as an active ingredient of a pharmaceutical composition or a nutraceutical composition. The pharmaceutical composition or the nutraceutical composition can be used for preventing or treating acute colitis or chronic colitis, and particularly, can effectively prevent, delay, alleviate or treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and the like.본 발명은 지모 추출물 등의 신규 용도에 관한 것으로서, 지모 추출물, 이의 분획물 또는 이로부터 단리된 화합물을 유효성분으로 포함하는 대장염 예방 또는 치료용 조성물을 제공한다. 본 발명에 따른 지모 추출물, 지모 추출물의 알코올 가용성 분획물 또는 지모로부터 단리된 만지페린(Mangiferin) 등은 약학 조성물 또는 식품 조성물의 유효성분으로 사용될 수 있고, 이러한 약학 조성물 또는 식품 조성물은 대장염, 특히 염증성 대장 질환(Inflammatory bowel disease； IBD) 또는 과민성 대장염 증후군((irritable bowel syndrome, IBS)등을 효과적으로 예방, 지연, 개선 또는 치료할 수 있다.
