Discussed is a process for the synthesis of nontoxic, monoclinic, yellow inorganic pigment bismuth vanadate, selectively synthesised by single step solid state reaction. The present innovative method involves the calcination of bismuth salt and vanadium pentaoxide admixture without the addition of any alkaline metals or earth metals and in absence of any organic and/or inorganic compound as a reagent or as a catalyst nor even as a solvent. Synthesize compound has a property to withstand against the chemical stress and radiation effect. Due to its stable chroma and nontoxic nature the pigment was found to be suitable for various pharmaceutical compositions as a colouring agent.
