Disclosed is a humidifier for humidifying medical gases. The humidifier includes a humidification module adapted for receiving a humidification chamber. The humidification module comprises an optical interface and an ultraviolet (UV) radiation source. The optical interface senses and/or conveys information. The optical interface is arranged to be directed to the humidification chamber such that the humidification chamber is illuminated with light of a visible wavelength. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation source illuminates the humidification chamber with wavelengths in the UV range for improving hygienic water quality of water in the humidification chamber in use.
