A speculum 10 comprising a first part 100 - preferably comprising a first blade 110 and a first handle 120 - and a second part 200 - preferably comprising a second blade 210 and a second handle 220 - and wherein the first part 100 and second part 200 are releasably coupled. A releasable coupling member - which preferably comprises a male part 130 provided on the first part 100 and a female part (300, Fig 8) provided on the second part 200 is also taught. A releasable coupling member of this sort may further form the pivot point about which the blades 110, 210 pivot. The releasable coupling member may further be arranged to be released through movement of the first part and/or the second part, preferably through deformation of the first 100 or second 200 part relative to the other.
