A method for protecting a plant from a disease caused by a fungus that comprises providing the plant with a heterologous plant defensin and a non-proteinaceous chemical fungicide. The plant defensin must exhibit a relative permeability index of greater than 0.12 in contact with the fungus on a scale where the permeability index of defensin NaD1 is sat as 1.0. The defensin can be a floral defensin of a solanceous plant, in particular the defensins, NaD1, NaD4, Tomdef2 and Tomdef3. Also provided are assays for identifying defensins for use in the method, including an intracellular permeability assay using a green fluorescent DNA binding dye or propidium iodide and an ATP release assay using a luciferase.
