PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible for a subject information acquisition apparatus which uses a photoacoustic effect to acquire information in multiple reception directions and in multiple reception positions in a short time with less artifacts without making the system larger.SOLUTION: The subject information acquisition apparatus comprises: a light source for projecting optical pulses coded by a predetermined number of pulse trains to a subject； a probe provided with a transducer for receiving photoacoustic waves generated from the subject projected with optical pulses and outputting electrical signals； and information acquisition means for decoding a predetermined number of electrical signals output from the transducer and acquiring characteristic information of the subject on the basis of the decoded electrical signals. The projection of light is performed with the relative position between the transducer provided in the probe and the subject being changed before the predetermined number of optical pulse trains has been projected.
