The present invention provides betaine compounds for use in preventing obesity, excessive fat accumulation and/or metabolic disorders associated with any of the foregoing in a subject, wherein prophylaxis comprises betaine compounds. Administered directly to the subject during infancy or to the subject's mother during lactation.
