The present invention relates an air cleaner and a method for controlling an air cleaning system. The air cleaner includes a main body and a height adjusting unit for supporting the main body and adjusting a height of the main body. The air cleaner includes an air purifier for performing an air purge operation an illumination unit disposed on at least one surface of the main body to illuminate light in a predetermined direction and a controller for setting a height of the air purifier during operation of the air purifier and controlling the height adjusting unit so that the main body is positioned at a predetermined height from the ground based on the height of the air purifier, wherein the controller performs different controls related to the illumination unit according to the height of the main body. The air purifier of the present invention can first purify the air having a predetermined height by adjusting the height of the air cleaner or exhaust the purified air at a predetermined height.
