A system and method for performing respiratory therapy in a respiratory system may adjust the flow of respiratory gas to a patient based on a detected patient respiratory cycle. The respiratory system may include a non-closed patient interface. The respiratory system may be configured to deliver high flow therapy. The patient respiratory cycle may be determined using one or more measurement parameters such as flow rate, blower motor speed, and / or system pressure.
